Highlights, Holidays, and Fun Facts
Formerly known as Sextilis and later renamed for Roman Emperor Augustus, August is tied to the “Dog Days of Summer.” It’s the most common birth month and is also recognized as Back-to-School Month—so a big shout-out to all the educators, students, and parents kicking off a new academic year. And get this: the very first sandwich was created in August. That’s right—the sandwich! Thank you, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich for your contribution to history.
Let’s take a look at what else is in store this month:
National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day (August 4)—Warm, gooey, and worth celebrating.
International Cat Day (August 8)—A purr-fect excuse to share pics of your favorite feline friends.
National Book Lovers Day (August 9)—The perfect day to crack open a new read or revisit an old favorite.
National Nonprofit Day (August 17)—Shout-out to all our grads making a mission-driven difference. Also, WGU is a nonprofit!
National Dog Day (August 26)—Because cats don't need to get all the attention this month.
- Women's Equality Day (August 26)—Commemorating the 1920 ratification of the 19th Amendment.
Just Because Day (August 27)—No reason needed. Take a break, call a friend, or do something kind—just because.

Boston is packed with history and fun facts!. It’s home to America’s first public park, the first subway system, and the country’s oldest university (Harvard). And yes, it’s called Beantown thanks to baked beans—not because of being home to the first Dunkin’ Donuts.

|
|
|
We’re headed northeast to celebrate another incredible group of Night Owls at Boston Commencement. We’re proud to honor our WGU graduates, we'll see you there—and we'll be sure to try the beans!
